Recommended SIFF + Ticket Giveaway: Mistaken for Strangers

I was skeptical of Mistaken for Strangers at first, because I'm not a fan of The National (when I told my friend this the other day she looked at me like she couldn't understand the words coming out of my mouth. It was seriously AWKWARD), but this documentary is actually less about the band itself, and more about Tom Berninger, the brother of lead singer Matt, who is both the Director and subject.

The trailer has a lot of "whoa" moments,  including my favorite: listening to Matt Berninger talk about how his brother is a metalhead, and thinks "indie rock's pretentious bullshit". HAHA. Ha. (I hope you guys are laughing with me!) And the ouchy "The only reason you ARE here is because you're my brother"

Anyway! Watch the trailer. It looks cool, and we've got two tickets to each show for a very lucky Imaginary! The film screens on Monday 5/20, 7pm and again Tuesday 5/21, 4pm at The Egyptian. For a chance to win, email us at tig {at} threeimaginarygirls {dot} com with the subject line "Indie Rock is Bullshit" anytime between now and 3pm Friday 5/17. And make sure you tell us WHICH screening you want tickets to! We'll notify the winners Friday night.

We've got free tickets to Dancing on the Valentine 8!!! {2/9 at Neumos}

You guys! There are only a few more weeks until Dancing on the Valentine 8: A Cure for Leukemia

In case you haven't heard of DOTV before (what!), the fabulous Ms. Jenny George, a survivor of Leukemia, decided to start this benefit 8 years ago to give back to the organization that provides support to cancer patients, and is working hard to find a cure. The benefit has grown each year to raise more money for LLS, and this year DOTV is hoping to raise at least $10,000 to beat the hell out of last year's record-breaking $7,000+

The 2013 show features local bands covering the music of The Cure at Neumos on Saturday, 2/9, with all proceeds from ticket sales and raffles going to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The line-up is FIERCE this year, with Adra Boo, Daniel G. Harmann and The Trouble Starts, Erik Blood, Gibraltar, Head Like a Kite, Hotels, Lesli Wood (of The Redwood Plan) w/Jupe Jupe, NighTrain, Panama Gold, The Grizzeled Mighty, Vox Mod, and interludes by DJ Mike Steve. Plus! Our own Imaginary Dana will be emcee'ing, and Jenny's handsome son Attitcus will be making a special appearance on stage at the beginning of the night to sing some Robert Smith!!!

We've got a pair of tix to giveaway to a lucky winner, so you can spend your donation dollars on raffle tickets instead. Email us at tig {at} threeimaginarygirls {dot} com with the subject line "Lovecats" anytime between now and 5pm Monday 2/4 for a chance to win 'em. We'll notify the winner Tuesday am.

Recommended show + free tickets: Bands on the Big Screen {1/31}

Seattle's got talent, friends, and next Thursday {that's the 31st} you can see the art that people make out of the art that people are making -- yep, we're talking about Bands on the Big Screen. The event is a ninety-minute screening of music videos by local filmmakers at SIFF Cinema Uptown, followed by a Q&A with the directors. As if a chance to see some of your favorite artists on a screen larger than life isn't enough to send you running for your wallet, the whole thing is a benefit put on by our pals Team Up for Nonprofits for Northwest Folklife.

That fifteen bucks you spend on a ticket will go a long way towards a great cause, but if you want to roll the dice on a pair of free passes, we've got your number! Just send an email to tig {at} threeimaginarygirls {dot} com with the subject line "BandsOnTheBigScreen" between now and 5pm on Tuesday, January 29th. We'll pick a lucky winner and notify you by email that you're heading to the show on us.

For everyone else, that ticket purchase link is below. We'll see you there!

{Jon Jon Augustavo, Brad Curran, Hayley Young, Stephan Gray and Tyler Kalberg present videos made with and for Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, Pickwick, Kaylee Cole, and more. Tickets are $15.00 adv and available here.}

Let us be your Sugar Daddy! We've got a pair of tickets to see Hedwig at The Moore {1/15}

Hedwig and the Angry Inch at the Moore Seattle WAYou guys! Hedwig and the Angry Inch is coming to The Moore Theatre this month, and we've got a pair of tickets to give a lucky imaginary for the 1/15 preview performance!!!

I am a HUGE fan of Hedwig (though admittedely, I've only seen it on film -- not on stage) and a HUGE fan of Director Ian Bell, who does the amazing Brown Derby series at Re-Bar. With him behind this production of Hedwig, a rock musical about an East-Berlin rock-and-roll godess who recounts her crazy life story, all while backed by her kick-ass band "The Angry Inch", I have no doubt that this will be a fantastic show.

Trust me, you WANT this pair of tickets. For a chance to win 'em, just send an email to us at tig {at} threeimaginarygirls {dot} com with the subject line "Wicked Little Town" anytime between now and 9am on Monday, January 14. We'll choose a winner that morning, and send you an email letting you know that you (and your choice of +1) are on the list.

And if you don't win the tix, I suggest you purchase tickets anyway because THIS IS GOING TO BE AWESOME. (And if go and happen to have some blonde chick in glasses singing her heart out along with Ms. Hedwig in your audience, I apologize in advance.)

{Hedwig and the Angry Inch | The Moore Theatre | 1/15-1/27 | Presented by Seattle Theatre Group and The Balagan Theatre | $17.50 - $32.50

Get judged by Imaginary Amie at EMP's Fashionably Undead Bash! {10/6}

It's no secret that October is my favorite month, because I think Halloween is the BEST THING EVER -- and also, I love horror movies. Duh. So when the fine folks at EMP asked me to be a costume contest judge at their Fashionably Undead Prom this year I totally freaked out and started screaming (with glee, not terror) about how awesome it's going to be!

To celebrate another one of my favorite things ever, the Can't Look Away: the Lure of Horror Film exhibit, which is getting shiny new things added from Shaun of the Dead, Buffy the Vampire Slayer (eee! I'm already wow'd by the inclusion of Mr. Pointy and am super excited to see what else they add), and The Blair Witch Project, they're throwing another awesomely horrific hoedown with 80s music from "Stake it Up" (aka; All Mixed Up), DJ Severed Hans (ha!), tarot card readings, Carrie and Teen Wolf-inspired flashbacks, spiked punch (hopefully not LITERALLY, but you never know!), flashlight tours, a photo booth, hair and makeup stylings by VAIN, and a costume contest for the honor of being named Prom King and Queen!!!

We've also got two pairs of tickets to giveaway, people! Send an email to us at tig {at} threeimaginarygirls {dot} com with the subject line "You’ve got red on you" anytime between now and noon on Wednesday, October 3. We'll choose a winner Wednesday afternoon, and send you an email letting you know that you (and your choice of +1) are on the list for the Prom.

Although I can't promise that a bucket of pig's blood won't be involved, I can promise that EMP knows how to throw a party of epic proportions, and I can't wait to see all the amazing costume creations y'all come up with. And this shindig happens early enough in the month that it won't interfere with all your other spooky Halloween-y plans! There are some rules around costumes, you guys, so check 'em out before you put yours together and join me for all night dancing -- and judgement! but I mean the good kind. Totally the good kind.

Recommended show + free tickets: Poor Moon at Neumos {9/20}

So far, the self-titled first full-length from Poor Moon hasn’t received as much notice as some other Fleet Foxes-related acts, but that is certainly no fault of its own: on Poor Moon, deceptively simple arrangements of lilting vocal melodies and folksy instruments float just above preciousness in a macramé hammock.

Containing sounds drawn out of every aisle of a vintage record store – from Neil Young to barefoot, school bus-dwelling hippies and long-forgotten glossier pop groups – Poor Moon unsurprisingly bears a lot of resemblance to Fleet Foxes, especially on album closer “Birds.” If we're going to generalize, for the most part, this side project is Fleet Foxes shorn of their more experimental and psychedelic elements. I could forgive you for considering Poor Moon to be Fleet Foxes declawed, but I couldn't agree. For my money, the restrained elegance of Poor Moon is exquisite.

You don’t have to take my word for it, though. Poor Moon will be playing at Neumos with Tom Eddy + Pollens on September 20. Tickets are only $12, but if you’re feeling lucky enough, you might get in for free! Just shoot us an email at tig {at} threeimaginarygirls {dot} com with the subject "SendMeToPoorMoon" anytime between now and 2pm on Monday, September 17. We'll choose a winner Monday afternoon, and send you an email letting you know that you (and your choice of +1) are on the list for Thursday's show.

Good luck!

Lebowski Fest really ties the city together + free tickets {8/10}

Actually, The Big Lebowski is probably the most divisive of the Coen brothers’ movies. Like Woody Allen or Pauly Shore, you either get it or you don’t. For those who get it, The Dude can be almost a messianic figure, equally imbued with laconic wisdom and White Russians. How many other cult movies have been made the subject of academic studies?

The Dude abides as a cult figure this weekend for Seattle’s fourth official Lebowski Fest. According to Lebowski Fest tradition, the celebration consists of two parts – a screening of the movie, often preceded by musical performances, and on the following day, a bowling party complete with costumes, contests and what-have-you. I don’t really need to try to convince you how cool this is. You either already micturated the rug with excitement or a gang of nihilists couldn’t drag you to this event no matter what I say.

Friday’s 21+ movie screening kicks off at the Showbox at the Market at 8:00 p.m. with unidentified musical guests. Lebowski Fests have featured My Morning Jacket and Eagles cover bands – so you take your chances. The all-ages bowling party on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Roxbury Lanes also promises “special guests.”

You can buy tickets to either or both events online or you can try to win free tickets to Friday’s screening from us. Just shoot us an email at tig {at} threeimaginarygirls {dot} com with the subject "I can get you a toe" anytime between now and 3pm on Wednesday, August 8th. The editorial “we” will choose a few Achievers, and send you an email letting you know that you +1 are on the list for Friday's show.

{August 10th - Movie Party - Special guests + The Big Lebowski screening @ The Showbox at the Market - Ages 21+ - $15 ADV / $18 DOS; August 11th - Bowling Party - @ Roxbury Lanes - All Ages - $25 ADV / $30 DOS; Tickets and info here.}

Recommended show + free tickets: Dum Dum Girls and Craft Spells at the Neptune {7/28}

Who wouldn't want to listen to some amazing girl powered music AND give big to charity at the same time? That's why we love the bejeezus out of the collaboration between KEXP, STG, and Starbucks that is making the magic known as the Little Big Show happen. A few times a year they put on their explorer caps, search out some great bands, bring them to the Neptune, and then donate all of the ticket sale money to a Seattle nonprofit. And this latest installment on July 28th {this Saturday!} features the dreamy indie punk/pop sounds of the Dum Dum Girls and the soft electro of Craft Spells. And did we mention that all of the money will benefit the National Film Festival for Talented Youth (that sponsors the largest youth film festival in the whole wide flippin' world, based right in our hometown)? Rad!

Are you feeling lucky? Because we have a pair of tickets to giveaway! You betcha, you could be the first to hear Dee Dee and the gals play tracks of their new EP, End of Daze, which drops on September 25. And homegirl can belt it out so you don't want to miss it! Think Joan Jett meets Joey Ramone, crossed with Robert Smith. The Dum Dum Girls are the type of badass band I dreamed of joining when I was thirteen.

So you wanna win those tickets? Just shoot us an email at tig {at} threeimaginarygirls {dot} com with the subject "LittleBigShow3" anytime between now and 2pm on Wednesday, July 25th. We'll choose a winner Wednesday afternoon, and send you an email letting you know that you +1 are on the list for Saturday's show.

Good luck!

Recommended show + free tickets: Jonathan Coulton at the Showbox {6/22}

And now, straight from his iPhone the road, a few words from Seattle's own John Roderick as to why your attendance at Friday night's Jonathan Coulton show at the Showbox would be a good idea:

"People make the mistake of thinking Jonathan is a novelty songwriter, because his tunes are set after the zombie apocalypse, or they're sung from the perspective of a deranged scientist, or they sometimes feature monkeys. But Jonathan's songs are not novelties, they stack up against any pop songs written by anyone. Monkeys aside, Jonathan's songs are ultimately about losing what you crave most, or loving too hard, or feeling lost, or whatever any great songs are about. Plus, he's hilarious and smart, and his fans are devoted to him but totally inclusive. There are plenty of people who prize their own cynicism over ever discovering something new, or laughing unexpectedly, or finding a new way to express an ancient feeling. It's foolish trying to convince cynics of anything. For everyone else, Jonathan Coulton is one of the best practitioners of smart pop music working today. Go see him. (Plus, I'm opening, and all that stuff I said about Jonathan is totally true about me too, except for the monkeys)."

We couldn't have said it any better ourselves. Tickets are still available, but we want to give you a chance to see the show for free. Send an email to tig {at} threeimaginarygirls {dot} com with the subject line "Let'sBeNemeses" sometime between now and 5pm on Thursday, June 21st. Tell us why we should pick you to go to the show, and if you're our lucky winner, you'll be on the guest list for Friday night. Good luck!
